Alleged Plot to Attack Belgian Premier Prevented

Belgium's Prime Minister Bart de Wever

Belgium's police have arrested three individuals accused of plotting an assault on the country's premier, Bart de Wever.

Federal prosecutors described the suspected plan as a terrorist act motivated by jihadist ideology targeting the PM and additional elected representatives.

During investigations conducted in the Deurne area of Antwerp, near the PM's home, investigators discovered a potential IED and evidence that the individuals were planning to employ a UAV.

While the intended targets of the strike were not disclosed by name by the legal authorities, Vice Premier Maxime Prevot revealed that Belgium's leader was among them.

"Reports of a intended attack targeting PM Bart de Wever is profoundly disturbing," the deputy prime minister declared in a post on X on the investigation day.

"This underscores that we are confronting a serious terrorism risk and that we have to stay alert," he concluded.

The three individuals detained on allegations of attempted terrorist murder and participation in the functions of a jihadist network all live in the city of Antwerp, as stated by the prosecutor's office. They were with years of birth in three different years between 2001 and 2007.

By late Thursday, one of the individuals was let go, while two others were undergoing questioning and scheduled to appear in court on the following day.

Federal prosecutors stated that the individuals were taken into custody after a judge ordered raids of their residences in the location by police officers supported by explosive sniffer dogs.

Throughout these raids that they discovered a object which closely resembled a homemade bomb, lead prosecutor Ann Fransen stated at a media briefing on the day of the events.

Investigations also revealed a container of metal spheres and a three-dimensional printer, with "indications that they intended to use a drone to attach a payload", she added.

Fransen stated that there had been 80 terrorism investigations launched in the nation so far this year - more than the total number of instances in the previous year.

During the spring, five suspects were convicted for a previous year's plan to strike Belgium's leader while he was acting as Antwerp's mayor.
