Alan Partridge is in crisis! However, many are in similar straits today? When we last saw him on screen, Alan had an on-air breakdown while presenting the magazine program This Time, wrapping up with him excluded of the BBC. At the start of his new, self-produced project, the light documentary How Are You? It’s Alan (Partridge), Alan discloses he’s since hit another low by fainting into the lap of a female interviewee at a corporate event for Norfolk agribusiness stalwarts. Hard moments, but such characters rebound: tie your troubles to a national trend and see if you can get a series out of it.
How Are You? showcases the beloved persona in investigative guise, looking into an epidemic of anxiety, stress and loneliness that he perceives as escalating: “In old-fashioned language, it’s gone crazy!” He tries out spiritual practices, revive old school ties, and embark on calming rural strolls, alongside facing his history. Initial episodes culminate in a fraught but healing gathering with “Sidekick” Simon Denton (Tim Key), his old partner from past shows, and throughout the series, we’re shown unseen clips from Alan’s stints.
With Coogan and his creative partners, How Are You? represents a shift in direction. While the previous show explored new ground, How Are You? frequently revisits old themes: as well as directly reviving old formats, the whole piece resembles the mockumentaries from the 2010s. As his life intertwines with the subject matter, we’re most strongly reminded of the podcast series.Dual Personas of the Character
This leads to a minor issue. We see two versions of Alan: Successful Alan (with high-profile jobs) and Struggling Alan (without work), and although Wilderness Alan was the star of the faultless TV sitcom I’m Alan Partridge back in 1997, a more wistful Wilderness Alan has recently taken flight in books and audio projects. How Are You? situates us in his world and features Kelly as Katrina, his highly inappropriate love interest from the podcast. Yet this heartbreaking narrative – he refuses to accept her betrayal with his friend and local tanning-centre mogul – feels like one that would have benefited from the slower pace of audio-only Alan, enabling mental imagery to amplify laughs. When we can’t see him, Wilderness Alan has room to breathe: modern TV excels at pressuring the successful Alan and seeing his downfall, as in past series.
The Genius of Sloppy Errors
Yet, these issues pale beside a key reality: in any format, he is the top humorous character in Britain, and brief appearances yield constant humor than competing shows. How Are You? is produced and directed by Alan, as well as starring him, which highlights his talent for mistakes and bad choices. If he thinks Britain’s mental health problems are best illustrated by an aggressively edited montage of exploding fruit, it will be included, and no one corrects his verbal errors or the phrase “mental bealth henefits” in his voiceover. The subtle wince he shows off-camera sensing the scene went poorly consistently amuses, and the same goes for his transitional clips, topped by his earnest, flawed grins while drinking tea clumsily.
Striking Moments and Feelings
What could be funnier than his dumpster antics? Absolutely not. Visually he’s a feast too, with an implausibly light hair color, and his clothing showcasing loud pants, statement footwear, an arsenal of body warmers and over-the-top joy about style revivals.
Moreover, the content reveals his deeper side that appeared under new creative guidance. Repeatedly, the show achieves emotional depth, where his blindness exposes pain that briefly evokes strong feelings, before the persona snaps back in and we’re crying from laughter again instead. It succeeds because of enduring fandom: any version of Alan Partridge is always welcome back.
