On Friday, the Attorney General appointed interim US attorney Jay Clayton to lead an investigation into political adversaries of the President and their relationships with Jeffrey Epstein. This action came hours after Trump instructed her to launch the investigation.
In a statement, Bondi highlighted Clayton as “a highly skilled and reliable legal expert”. She added, “The department will handle this matter promptly and thoroughly to provide clarity for citizens.”
This development contrasts with a July memo from justice department officials which indicated that the Epstein files lacked grounds for further inquiries. As per the memo, investigators “did not uncover evidence that could predicate an investigation against uncharged third parties”
This news coincides with growing pressure from the president on lawmakers to block the full release of Epstein-related documents ahead of an upcoming House vote in the coming days. Many Republicans are expected to back the release.
Recently released emails from Epstein have spotlighted Trump’s previous connections with the sex trafficker, revealing information that he knew more about Epstein’s conduct than he has previously let on.
On Friday, the President announced he would ask the Department of Justice to examine connections between Epstein and Democratic figures, specifically naming Bill Clinton, Larry Summers and Reid Hoffman. Interestingly, he also described the “Epstein hoax” as a “deception”.
Other notable events featured appeals to protect national parks, criticism of an antisemitism watchdog, and a judge’s decision for a settlement in the Purdue Pharma lawsuit.
