Three police officers lost their lives and at least 15 others sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate gas explosion at a country home in northern Italy.
The explosion was triggered as police and firefighters approached the house near the Verona region to enforce an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.
All three victims who died were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Two individuals got detained at the location and one more individual who escaped after the blast was located shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to hospital.
The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location showed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Minister of the Interior the Interior Minister, who noted that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.
The president of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the property was facing an removal notice due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the three owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been sent to speak to the family members who had secured themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe a family member set off the blast.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed reporters.
A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our personnel,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also located at the residence, the interior minister said.
Those injured by the incident included 11 other members of the military police as well as three officers of national police and a firefighter.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the property was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.
The prosecutor was convinced the explosion had happened on a level above the entrance and informed reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the incident, he mentioned personnel had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being opened”.
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed Italian media, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”
Defence Minister the Defence Minister joined other political leaders in paying tribute to the three men who had been killed in the service of their country.
