Tens of thousands of colorfully attired participants gathered in central Addis Ababa for the yearly thanksgiving festival over the past days.

Irreecha is celebrated by the Oromo people, the biggest population group, and is held at the end of the nation's primary wet season.

Every year, festival-goers gather around revered rivers and lakes to give thanks to their divine beings for the greenery that the rains have provided.

"I've attended the festival for the past nine years," commented 25-year-old Moata Abdulmajid.

"To me, this event embodies my cultural background, it reflects the honor and greatness of my community."

Traditional clothing and jewelry

Males, women, the older generation and the youth all take part, decorated in eye-catching garments and ornaments.

They sing, perform traditional dances, exchange narratives and place newly gathered grass and floral arrangements in the water - representing existence, regeneration and hope.

International visitors at festival

The celebration not only draws individuals from across Ethiopia, attendees come from internationally.

"I attended last year - it was so good, so magnificent, I brought my children with me now," said one visitor, originating from Belfast in Northern Ireland.

"It's incredible. All people wants to say hello, everyone offers affection and offers greetings."

The opening day of the celebration occurred on recently in the main city. On the next day, participants journeyed to Bishoftu, a settlement near the urban center.

Even though this celebration has its foundations in native spiritual practices, it is now observed by the majority of the Oromo people, irrespective of their faith.

In the last ten years, the number of participants attending the event has grown significantly. This is partly due to the growth of social media, where many younger generation record their attire, dance moves and singing during the gathering.

In the previous years, Irreecha was served as a venue for political demonstrations - the Oromo people have historically expressed concerns about systemic disadvantages.

Nevertheless, the latest gathering proceeded harmoniously, with an emphasis on celebration, togetherness and cultural pride.
