The English golfer Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Battle Versus Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed exceptional nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.

Rai sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the victory, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was also a play-off victory over Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Drama

The champion entered the last day with a one-shot advantage over countryman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

The challenger moved one shot ahead with two holes to play after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the last green.

Play-Off Climax

That set up a playoff at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to take the title and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.
