Security Council representatives gave the green light to a US resolution to lift sanctions on Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa before his Washington trip the following week.

He was appointed transitional president following his leadership in a revolutionary movement that drove out the former president in winter 2024, concluding thirteen long years of internal conflict.

Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a strong political signal" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" after Assad's removal.

Sharaa was under UN sanctions while commanding the Islamist group HTS, once connected to the terrorist network. Washington eliminated the organization from the catalog of foreign terror groups in July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister the interior minister.

Syria's foreign minister welcomed the removal of these restrictions, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to the United States and to friendly nations for assisting of Syria and its people."

Upcoming White House Meeting

Sharaa's White House visit this coming Monday occurs subsequent to American leader Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa demonstrated "substantial headway" towards bringing peace to the war-torn country.

After the meeting, Trump remarked the Syrian leader possessed "a genuine opportunity at pulling it together".

The pair met for the first time during May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through Arab nations.

Following that encounter, the US president described him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".

His Islamist group HTS served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country until he severed ties in 2016.

Previous US Visit

Monday's visit will not be Sharaa's first trip to the United States in the current year. In September, he emerged as the first Syrian leader to address the global assembly in Manhattan for nearly six decades.

Throughout his presentation, he stated the country had been "restoring its proper position within the global community" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
